-
- 1. NEW FEATURES!!
- -----------------
- External WAD support:
- RunDOOM now supports the ever-popular external WAD files! Remember,
- you must specify the Episode and the Level if you want to start on the
- external WAD level. Up to 10 external WADs may be loaded at once.
-
- Saved Game Editor (REGISTERED DOOM ONLY):
- Saved game editor! RunDOOM now has a built-in saved game editor for
- the registered version of DOOM. We are respecting id's request in not
- allowing modification of any shareware version files.
-
-
- 2. INSTALLATION:
- ----------------
- Just unpack the RunDOOM archive into your DOOM directory. Change to
- this directory and type RDM to start! The file RUNNER.EXE is what is
- actually used to run DOOM, but is only called by RDM.EXE and will not
- work by itself. This is done to remove the larger RDM.EXE from memory
- before spawning DOOM.
-
- (example):
-
- PKUNZIP RDM4_0 C:\DOOM <enter>
- C: <enter>
- CD\DOOM <enter>
- RDM <enter>
-
-
- 3. OPERATION:
- -------------
- On startup, RunDOOM will load the default configuration from
- the RUNDOOM.DAT file. If this file does not exist, it will
- be created with a sample default config. Once the config
- has been loaded and all necessary files (DOOM.EXE, SERSETUP.EXE
- DOOM.WAD/DOOM1.WAD, and RUNNER.EXE) check out ok, the RunDOOM
- screen will pop up. This screen is where you will configure
- your DOOM session.
-
- To change a particular option, press the key that corresponds
- to the highlighted character for that option (ie. hit "E" to
- change the episode). Most options will pop up to a menu that
- lets you select a particular item. Some, however, will require
- attitional information that you will have to supply (ie. a phone
- number).
-
- Once you have chosen all your options, hit "S" to save them. A
- window will pop up asking if it should overwrite the current
- config or create a new one with these settings. Creating a new
- config adds a record to your config database (RUNDOOM.DAT).
- Each time you create a new config, you add another record. By
- creating new configs and using the left and right arrow keys to
- move through them you have many different configurations at your
- fingertips!
-
-
- 4. CONFIGURATION OPTIONS:
- -------------------------
- Most of the following options will appear as a pop up window when
- selected. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to move the selection bar.
- Press ENTER to select an option or ESC to cancel.
-
- *Record:
- key: "*"
- This option allows you to 'jump' to a particular configuration in the
- config database without having to use the arrow keys and only move one
- record at a time. This option will prompt you for a record number to
- 'jump' to. Valid options are 1 - number of records (32767 max.)
-
- DOOM version:
- This is for display only. This tells if you have the registered or
- shareware version of *DOOM*. Some options of RunDOOM will be disabled
- if this reads "SHAREWARE".
-
- Saved Game:
- key: "G"
- This option allows you to load or remove a DOOM saved game. Once the
- game has been selected and appears in the slot, pressing "G" again
- removes it and indicates that you do not want to load a saved game.
-
- **Note that if you choose to load a saved game, other options such as
- Episode and Start Map are disabled. DOOM gets this info from the
- saved game.
-
- **If you have the registered version of DOOM, you will also have the
- option of editing a saved game by pressing "E" from the Load Saved
- Game window. (see Editing a Saved Game for more info)
-
- **This option is NOT saved as part of the normal configuration. The
- saved game will remain selected for the entire session, but will be
- removed the next time you start RunDOOM.
-
- External WAD:
- key: "X"
- DOOM level editors have become very popular! The only thing bad about
- them is you have to list all the WADs you want to play on the DOOM
- command line. Well, not anymore! The External WADs option lets you
- select up to 10 external WAD files to pass to DOOM. Press the SPACE BAR
- to tag the current WAD file. Tagged WADs are noted by a √ to the left
- of the filename. Once you have select the WADs you want, hit "ENTER"
- to accept or "ESC" to cancel.
-
- **This option is NOT saved as part of the normal configuration. All
- selected WADs will remain selected for the entire session, but will
- be removed the next time you start RunDOOM.
-
- Episode:
- key: "E"
- This option lets you select the episode you want to play. This menu
- lists all available episodes (depending on your DOOM version). There
- will also always be a fourth episode on the list. This is the random
- mode. Selecting this will drop you in a random episode (1 for the
- shareware version) and starting map. This is nice for two player
- deathmatches!
-
- /Start Map:
- key: "/"
- This option lets you select the level you want to start at. The menu
- will give you choices based on the current selected episode.
-
- Skill Level:
- key: "L"
- This option lets you select the starting skill level.
-
- Monsters:
- key: "M"
- This option lets you choose wether or not to have monsters, or to have
- the monsters respawn every few seconds.
-
- Two Player:
- key: "T"
- This option lets you select between cooperative or deathmatch mode.
- This only affects two player games (over the modem).
-
- COM Port:
- key: "C"
- This option lets you select which COM port your modem is on. This is
- used by SERSETUP to establish modem communications.
-
- Phone #:
- key: "P"
- This is where you will store the phone number used by SERSETUP. Once
- selected, you will be prompted to enter the phone number, including
- call waiting disable codes or other such items.
-
- Name:
- key: "N"
- This is where you can store the name of the person to which the phone
- number belongs. By entering a name, you can later use the Find Player
- option to recall the phone number and the DOOM settings last used.
- Once selected, you will be prompted for the name.
-
-
- 5. MENU OPTIONS:
- ----------------
- Run a 1 Player Game:
- key: "1"
- This option allows you to run a single player game with the current
- settings.
-
- Remove ext. WAD(s):
- key: "V"
- If you have chosen to load external WAD files, this option removes
- them from selection and cancels the request to load them.
-
- ! Run DOOM Alone:
- key: "!"
- Runs DOOM by itself with NO command line options.
-
- Dial this Number:
- key: "D"
- Runs SERSETUP instructing it to dial the current phone number. You
- must have a COM port selected and a number in the Phone # slot!
-
- Wait for Call:
- key: "W"
- Runs SERSETUP instructing it to wait for an incoming call. You must
- have a COM port selected for this option!
-
- Already Connected:
- key: "R"
- Runs SERSETUP signaling that a modem connection has already been
- established. You must have a COM port selected for this option!
-
- Save Settings:
- key: "S"
- Save the current settings. You will be asked if RunDOOM should
- overwrite the current settings, or create a new config in the
- configuration database.
-
- Save as Default:
- key: "A"
- Save the current settings as the startup defaults.
-
- Load Default:
- key: "L"
- Load the default startup configuration.
-
- Find a Player:
- key: "F"
- Lets you search for a particular player's name in the config database.
- If the player's name is found, that configuration will be loaded and
- displayed on the screen.
-
- Prev/Next:
- key: "LEFT/RIGHT ARROWS"
- This lets you "browse" through your different configurations defined
- in the database.
-
- ESC to Quit:
- key: "ESC"
- Hmmm... Wonder what this does!!!
-
-
- 6. EDITING A SAVED GAME:
- ------------------------
- Are you always running out of ammo at just the worst time? Frustrated
- cause you just can't find the BFG9000? Well, time to kick in the saved
- game editor!
-
- To get to the saved game editor, you must have the registered version
- of DOOM. Hit "G" to select a saved game. Select the game you wish to
- edit and hit "E". A window will pop up containing the information
- that you can edit defaulting to what is currently in the saved game.
-
- Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to move through the fields. Fields where the
- cursor pops up, will require you to type in a value (Health, for example).
- Other fields (or checkboxes) do not have a cursor in them. These fields
- can be toggled on ([X]) or off ([ ]) by pressing the SPACE BAR.
-
- Once everthing is to your liking, press "F2" to save the information or
- press "ESC" and leave the saved game in it's original state. Once the
- game has been edited, it can then be loaded using the Saved Game option.
-
-
- 7. COMMAND LINE OPTIONS:
- ------------------------
- Hey? Aren't we trying to cut down on these? Well, yeah. There is only
- one command line option and not even the programmers know it. It is
- rumored, however, if you find it, you will be rewarded in some way....
-
-
- 8. SOME TECHNICAL NOTES:
- ------------------------
- If you are using a later version of SERSETUP.EXE, like NUSER.EXE, then
- you must rename it to SERSETUP.EXE. Sorry.
-
